Memphis, Tennessee, is known as the “Home of the Blues,” but don't let the name fool you. There’s nothing sad about the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll.
If you enjoy museums, then the National Civil Rights Museum on Mulberry Street is a must-see. It’s located inside of the famous Lorraine Motel, where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Inside you’ll see exhibitions that tell the story of the fight to end segregation in the United States and learn about important events that took place in Memphis and beyond.
For a night out on the town, look no further than Beale Street. This iconic street, located in the heart of the city, stretches 1.8 miles from the Mississippi River to East Street. It’s full of nightclubs, theaters, restaurants, stores and bars, and there’s something for everyone, young and old. Beale Sweets Sugar Shack has what you need to satisfy a sweet tooth. Pop into B.B. King’s Blues Club for live music and a great atmosphere.
Just around the corner from Beale Street is the FedExForum arena, home to the Memphis Grizzlies. Ticket prices start at $20, so catch a game to see superstar athlete Ja Morant lead the team to victory.
For me, a good breakfast is essential to the start of a great day. While visiting, we had a chance to enjoy a local favorite Sunrise Memphis. It’s a quick-serve diner with a colorful aesthetic known for their breakfast sandwiches — referred to as “sammies” — made on homemade biscuits that are worth a second trip.
